Mutual Benefit, AKA singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lee, has dropped ‘Wasteland Companions’. It’s an impressive track, underpinned by the harmonic and structural music lessons he took from his exploration of New York’s jazz and classical radio stations during lockdown. This helped him re-contextualise fragments of songs written in 2019, retaining their essence but transporting them into new realms. He says the track “was inspired by a bittersweet hike I took years ago where the final vista revealed the aftermath of a forest fire. While it was a terrible sight, I was also moved by the new growth popping up. The imagery stayed with me and served as an important reminder of the life-changing relationships that can flourish in adverse conditions.” Mutual Beneft’s new album, Growing At The Edges, will arrive on October 6th, via Transgressive. -Dan Peeke
